Plums of Tropoja

Taste
It is difficult to find the prune trees (Prunus Domestica) in any area of Albania or the Balkan countries like here. This variety has grown in northeast Tropoja since the early 16th century. This fruit has been and remains a significant part of the lifestyle and well-being of many families in Tropoja. Black plums are known for their good quality and taste. Tropoja is proud of it and its production, like: rakia, jam and compote. Finally, the areas planted with black plum are expanding more and more, this is due to the high demand from European markets. Traditionally, Tropoja black plums are sold after being dried in the sun or in traditional wood-fired ovens with two compartments, one for fire and one for plums, a technique considered a work of art and a characteristic of the Tropoja area. However, there are few people who continue to process the plums in this way and this technique is at risk of extinction.
