MUSEO DELTA ANTICO

Sight
The museum finds space in the impressive neoclassical architecture of the 18th-century Hospital of the Infirm (1771/1784), created by Antonio Foschini and Gaetano Genta. It is one of the most significant and monumental buildings in the picturesque old town of Comacchio. It exhibits a rich heritage of archaeological heritage from the territory, from the first testimonies of the protohistoric era until the Middle Ages. Through the exhibition of almost two thousand exhibits and thanks to evocative reconstructions, agile guidance apparatus and with moments of interaction and involvement of the public, the museum tells the story of the ancient mouth of the Po which, with the numerous waterways and the streets of land, has been over the centuries an important hub of trade and civilization that connected the Mediterranean world and continental Europe. Of particular note are the sections dedicated to the Etruscan city of Spina, with objects from the village and the rich kits of the tombs, to the Roman world, to the birth of Comacchio in the high middle ages as a commercial emporium and bishop's seat. The precious cargo of the Roman ship of Comacchio, an authentic Pompeii of the sea that is a cross-section of the globalized world of the Roman Empire, has been transferred to the museum with an evocative new set-up.
