The Pomposian insula was originally surrounded by the waters (of the Po di Goro, the Po of Volano and the sea). The first historical document proving the existence of the abbey is, however, from the 9th century. In 981 he moved to the Pavese monastery of San Salvatore, and that eighteen years later he was subject to the jurisdiction of the archdiocese of Ravenna, later freeing it and enjoying, thanks to private donations, a period of great flowering. The abbey that we admire today was consecrated in 1026 (so built earlier) by Abbot Guido. Until the 14th century the abbey enjoyed ownership, both in the surrounding grounds (including a saline in Comacchio), and in the rest of Italy, thanks to donations; then it had a slow decline, due to geographical and environmental factors, such as malaria and the impaling of the area, also caused by the deviation of the Po hive (Ficarolo route, 1152). It was of great importance for the preservation and spread of culture during the Middle Ages, thanks to the Amanuan monks who resided there. In this abbey the monk Guido d'Arezzo came up with modern musical notation and stared at the name of the musical notes. In 1653 Pope Innocent X suppressed the monastery, which in 1802 was purchased by the Ravenna family Guiccioli. At the end of the 19th century the property passed to the Italian state, it is currently under management at the Museum Pole of Emilia-Romagna. On May 18, 1965, with the Pomposian a Abbatia bubble, Pope Paul VI granted the bishops of Comacchio the title of abbot of Pomposa; In 1986 the privilege passed to the archbishops of Ferrara-Comacchio.
