The pine tree lives under very different ecological conditions. They are resistant to frost and need plenty of light. They are well maintained on weaker, stony, sandy and dry soils. There are a large number of species and subspecies of pine. For area like our Dalmatia, indigenous is Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) which is a Mediterranean tree. It grows in forests and parks throughout the Mediterranean area. It thrives on sparse calcareous soil and repairs it well; it afforests karst terrains in the area of Mediterranean and semi-Mediterranean climate. What makes these trees special is their scent which many associate with the scent of the sea and summer. Often the scent of pine in combination with other essential oils is used in aroma therapy for relaxation. Today, this scent is widely known everywhere in the world, and Dalmatia can proudly say that this scent originated from its rocky soil.
