Sutjeska National Park is the oldest national park in BH. NP Sutjeska covering 17,250 ha. It was founded in 1962. Thanks to the outstanding natural values and their preservation, since 2000, NP Sutjeska has been included in II category IUCN (Department of Nature and Natural Resources Protection). Tjentište, as a central part of the Park, through which one of the most important routes to the sea passes is 96 km from Sarajevo. NP Sutjeska includes a spacious mountainous area on the tri-border of Bosnia, Herzegovina and Montenegro, surrounded by the rivers Piva, Drina, the source stream of Neretva, and the mountain massifs of Bioč, Vučevo, Maglić (the largest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2386 m), Volujak, Lebršnik and Zelengora . Most of the park's surface is covered with forests, and the rest is meadows, pastures and boulders above the upper limit of the forest. The most valuable pearl in the series of natural treasures of the NPS is a strictly protected reservation Perućica, one of the few preserved European rainforests. Perućica is the largest preserved rainforest in Europe. In Perućica, as well as in other parts of the Park, there is a rich and diverse flora and fauna, a series of endemic, rare and protected species. Significant value of NP Sutjeska is a rich cultural and historical heritage. Numerous material remains, written sources and monuments of earlier and recent history, among which the most significant Memorial Complex of Battle of Sutjeska, are testifying about the presence of man in this region, from prehistoric times but also testifying about the tumultuous past of this region. In the Roman period, the Middle Ages, the era of the Turks, as today, this was an important transit area. The very place of Tjentište got its name from a Latin word - a tentorium which means a tent, probably because it is developed in the place of the caravan station. NP Sutjeska today represent beautiful place for hiking, mountain biking or just for relaxing in walking through forest.
