Tamarix comes from the Hebrew word "tamara", which means "broom", and in order to connect the typical tamaris leaves with the part of the broom used for sweeping, it is also known as "sea broom". According to an ancient legend, it originates from Egypt. This tree is well known to all who were born in Dalmatia and is one of the species that is very common in the Mediterranean area. This species tolerates well, even requires saline soil that is not rich, tolerates the heat that is typical for Dalmatia during the summer months as well as wind gusts. In addition to the shade, they provide on the hottest days of the year, Tamaris is the perfect plant for the coast for the reason that it prevents coastal erosion. So, in addition to looking nice, it is very useful for this our climate. Tamaris is often called the "desert bush”, precisely because the poor tree endures everything and anything, from showering to the sea, the desert, the drought of cold (it suffers up to -20 degrees). They are truly an inseparable part of our Dalmatia region, and there is even an endemic Tamarix dalmatica known as Dalmatian metlika.
