Evia participates in the Natura 2000 program refering to the preservation of the natural environment. The purpose is to ensure the survival of endangered species of the ecosystem and biodiversity. The area preserves over 700 species of plants. Some are rare, endemic or even protected species. Ochi and Kavondoros have been recognized as centers of endemism in the Aegean and are characterized as a botanical paradise in Greece and Europe. Dirfis, the great mountain range in Evia, is full of rare endemic plants on its steep slopes. Stenis aesthetic forest lies on the southern slopes of the mountain and it is characterized by a large variety of flora. Many rare and endemic flowers grow in the area. Among the endemic species are the Evia Fritillaria, Evia tea, Silene, viola, Asperula and Oregano. Other interesting plants are Peony, lily, Campanula, Ballota acetabulosa and Veratrum album.
