Nestled between the present day Bukovica and Ravni Kotari is the former Roman City of Asseria, one of the most important Liburnian and Roman settlements in the area of northern Dalmatia. Asseria was founded in the pre-historic iron-age period. It was then an important settlement for an Illyrian tribe that inhabited the area before the Romans, the Liburnians. The boundaries of the territory of Asseria reached north to Bruška and east to Dobropoljci. The borders were to control the pastures for livestock. Some of the stones marking the border from the time of the Roman emperors Tiberius, Nero and Vespasianus, have been found and preserved.
