The area in which this green expanse is located north of the walls of Ferrara has been preserved over time by urbanization that has affected all other outlying areas of the city and, since 2003, has been dedicated to the memory of Giorgio Bassani. The park extends to the westernmost stretch of Belfiores ramparts, which are part of the building block of the walls. The most recent urban intervention that affected the city walls in this stretch, the furthest from the city centre, was the opening of two furnaces, in 1979, in correspondence with Via Azzo Novello. This irreparably destroyed a stretch of Renaissance defense of the Estense city but also allowed to obtain a passage for modern means without touching the ancient gate of the Angels and the northernmost part of the course Hercules I Este.
