Nature Park Orjen

The highest mountain in the zone of the coastal Dinarides (1894 m), and on its vertical profile numerous vegetation belts have been developed from the macchia zone to the mound belt, which reaches the highest peaks of this mountain. In scientific terms, Orjen is a key object in the study of the flora and vegetation of Dalmatia and the Dinarides in general, and - in terms of floristic-vegetation and phytogeographic specificities - this mountain massif is one of the most interesting mountains in the system of the southern Dinarides. In addition to its pronounced phytogeographical importance, the specific flora and vegetation of the Orjen area are reflected in the presence of a large number of stenoendemic and Balkan-endemic and relict species of plants and plant communities. It is especially important to single out the endemic or protected species: the pine (Pinus heldreichii), which gravitates in the higher zones to the very tops of the Orjen.
