Mašanović winery

Virpazar is a small fishing village located on the road from Podgorica to the coast. It lies at the point where the Crmnica and Orahovštica rivers meet and flows into Skadar Lake. During spring, the high water levels of Virpazar are turned into an island connected to the mainland by their three old stone bridges. The village is the center of Crmnica, a fertile region with a climate suitable for growing vines, olives and all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Virpazar is also the starting point for most boat trips to Skadar Lake. The town of Vir was first mentioned in 1242 and it is quite possible that at that time it was a small trading centre for local villages. Virpazar is well connected to Podgorica by highway and railway. Most days you will find people selling local food and wines, such as the famous Crmnica wines and grape brandy, Loza, but the best day to shop is Friday, the day of the local market. Mašanović Winery has a long tradition in the production of wine and brandy. It is located where King Nikola of Montenegro had vineyards and a cellar. Located in a small town - Virpazar, in Skadar Lake National Park, this winery has a very good location, as it is located 500 meters from the center of Virpazar, on the main road passing through Montenegro. The vineyard is located in the largest Crmnica field, called Orahovo, at 10 meters above sea level. Six different grape varieties are planted in the vineyard: Vranac (the indigenous Montenegrin grape variety), Marselan, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Kratosija. These grape varieties make many blends and separate wines. In addition to the vineyards, this family also owns more than 10,000m2 of farmed property for the production of brandy fruits: Vine (traditional brandy), kiwi, pomegranate, quince, apple, pear, plum and two liqueurs: walnut and cherry.
