The rich natural environment, the landscapes of particular natural beauty (mountains, lakes, rivers, forests, canyons, oaks, caves, wetlands and much more) make Evia an ideal and important area to observe the various birds both in spring, summer and winter months. Evia's wetlands are an intermediate station and refuge for migratory birds and are located on a migratory corridor (Northern Europe - Africa), so their importance is increased.
The Ochi and the Cavondoro areas are one of the most important migratory bird passages in our country. More than 220 species of birds have been observed in the area. In the highlands live Alectoris graeca, on the plain of Karystos rare Cercotrichas galactotes nest, and occasionally Gyps fulvus occur in the area. Larus audouinii, Calonectris diomedea, Puffinus yelkouan and Phalacrocorax aristotelis are rare in seas and rocks, while hydrobates pelagicus fly in Cavondoro. The predators are Aquila fasciata, Circaetus gallicus, Buteo buteo, Falco peregrinus, Falco eleonorae, Accipiter nisus and Falco tinnunculus while Aquila chrysaetos, Aquila pennata, Circus aeruginosus, Circus pygargus, Circus macrourus, and Buteo macrourus. Other species of the area are Scolopax rusticola, Streptopelia turtur, Cuculus canorus, Apus apus, Apus pallidus and many more.
If you prefer the mountain Ochi, the visitor will have the opportunity to hear the sounds of rare birds as well as if they are lucky enough to see them in their natural landscape.
