International Festival of Classical Drama, Ancient Theater of Eretria

The theater is one of the most impressive monuments of ancient Eretria and is one of the oldest known monuments of its kind. Funded by the Region of Central Greece, the flagship theater was renovated. In 2018, the Ancient Drama Festival began piloting, bringing the Eretria Ancient Theater to life 40 years later, one of the best theaters in Greece. In 2019 the Municipality of Eretria announced the organization of the International Classical Drama Festival in the ancient theater with annual events in the Sacred Space. In the theater the spectator can watch ancient drama performances such as Helen (Euripides), Oedipus Tyrannus (Sophocles) and Persians (Aeschylus) and others. The crowd's participation in the theater and the outdoors was so impressive that gave the opportunity to continue its operation and upgrade. The aim of the Festival is to include ancient Greek as well as other classical genres in a permanent annual international institution.
