Comacchio is an Italian municipality of 22,188 inhabitants of the province of Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna. It is the third largest municipality in the province. Comacchio is, from a landscape and historical point of view, one of the major centers of the Po Delta. It originates about two thousand years ago, during its history it was subjected to the power of the Exarchate of Ravenna first, the Duchy of Ferrara later, and then returned to the territories of the Pontifical State. The etymology of the name is uncertain (Greek-Latin cumaculum" "small wave"" ; "grouping of bumps" in Etruscan). The foundation is attributed to the Etruscans, who were already stationed in the Po Delta. Near Comacchio was the Etruscan city of Spina. Founded on the union of thirteen small islands (dunosi litoranei cordons) formed by the intersection of the mouth of the Primaro Po with the sea, it had to direct its own development, both in terms of urban planning and that of the economy, on the water element.
