The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo is the oldest museum institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded on February 1, 1888, during the Austro-Hungarian rule. Initially, it was located in unconditional premises, so that the regulation plan from 1909 would make a sketch of the museum and envisage its construction in the central part of Sarajevo, on todays Trg Bosne i Hercegovine. Architect Karlo Paržik designed the museum building, which consists of four separate pavilions, interconnected by terraces, with an inner atrium, where the botanical garden is located. The building was made in the Neo-Renaissance style. Interestingly, it is the only museum building in Southeast Europe purpose-built for this purpose. The National Museum has managed to collect a good part of the cultural and national heritage of the country and all its peoples. The exhibits are classified by departments (archeological, ethnological and natural sciences) in several collections (folklore, numismatic, natural, prehistoric, ancient and others), and the most important museum exhibit is the famous Sarajevo Haggadah, a traditional Jewish book brought to Sarajevo by the Sephardim. after his persecution from Spain.
